Bring on the Eggs!

March!  The meteorological beginning of spring (even though it won't arrive in New England for quite some time).   In my house, this means that it's time to decorate.  And that means eggs.  Lots of eggs.

I've been creating and collecting Easter eggs for many years now.  Many dyed hard boiled eggs will last for years--I have some that are at least 15 years old.  When shaken them gently, you can hear a rattle which is the dried up egg inside.  Sometimes they don't last so long. If you are trying to keep an egg and you smell something...check your eggs carefully and dispose of the stinky culprit.

Onion Skin Dyed

These are probably my oldest eggs and the most unique.
Red onion skins work best for dying but dark yellows ones work as well.
You can look in the onion section of the grocery store and
sack up lots and lots of skins and probably pay a few pennies for them,
or ask the produce people who may give you lots for free.

Silk Dyed

I wrapped these eggs tightly in a silk scarf and boiled them.
They are about 5 years old and still look beautiful.

Origami Paper Covered

Martha made hers with real eggs, however I used wooden ones.
I shredded some of the same origami print for the nest.

Dyeing eggs is fun and easy and there are great resources online.   Here are some links where you will find detailed instructions. The main thing is to try something new and have fun!  Let me know if you do any egg dyeing and how it turns out!

And, in case you are wondering....more eggs are on the way, we've just skimmed the surface!

  1. Martha would be proud! Interesting, informative and intriquing post. I would of never guessed that you could keep hb eggs for years. Your collection is lovely. Enjoy Spring, whenever it arrives.
